After weeks of preparation and thanks to your generous help, the AMURTEL Mother-Baby Area in central Athens has opened its doors to refugee mothers and babies.
At our new center we will:
- deliver antenatal and postnatal care to mothers and babies;
- address the critical needs of infant feeding from birth to two years of age; and
- provide a safe and relaxing environment for refugee mothers and babies.
Midwives and breastfeeding specialists are here every day to assess pregnant women and mothers and listen to their stories. There is also a baby bathing area where mothers can enjoy one-to-one time with their child. We will soon provide a midday meal for children under two.
Women have already started to come regularly to enjoy the space: spending time with their babies, drinking tea, playing with their children, and meeting our team of volunteers as well as other mothers. The room echoes with conversation and laughter in languages from all around the world.
If you want to join our team of volunteers and translators, get in touch to request an application form! If you need persuading, here are five reasons to volunteer for AMURTEL.
Our center really does need your help! So please don’t hesitate to donate via this website. To donate items, please visit our Facebook page where we regularly post a list of items needed. Contact us to arrange delivery.
